The verse on display this week confronts us with the truth of death as a consequence of sin.

Be assured dear fellow Villagers, this is not intended to cause any fear or upset; we simply present the truth of the Bible. This truth is as old as sin itself, Romans 5:12a “wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin…” – we are perhaps more conscious and sensitive to it at this time.

Sadly, there is no escaping the reality of the circumstances we are in. Each day at around 3pm there is an update published on the national death count related to this virus. Our prayers are that the numbers continue to fall and that the ‘peak’ has passed. Whilst these are deaths linked to the virus, the Bible has always been clear like in this verse – the wages, the payoff, the consequences of sin is death. James wrote in his letter chapter 1 verse 15 “sin, when it is finished, brings forth death”. Not just physical, but ultimately spiritual.

We will not dwell on this first part of the verse, though it is necessary that we are confronted with it. We must come to the conclusion that we are included in the ‘all’ when the Bible says “and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” Romans 5:12b.

The remainder of the verse on display brings us the wonderful news that God provides eternal life in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ. He is the one who left Heaven and ultimately gave His life upon the cross of Calvary; His shed blood and the giving of His life means men, women, boys & girls can have their sin forgiven by accepting God’s free gift of salvation!

In chapter 2 of the letter to the Hebrews we learn more of that gift: because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could He die, and only by dying could He break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could He set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.

Perhaps over these last few weeks you’ve known something of that fear, maybe in a way you’ve never realised before. God offers you eternal life today; this is a gift, you simply need to receive it by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ. He has conquered death and proclaimed in Revelation 1:12 “I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen.”
