Through this particular verse on display, we are pointing you to no other person than the Lord Jesus Christ.

You’d think that at a time when nationally we’re being asked to stay in our homes that it would be restful and peaceful, but quite the opposite – there is anxiety and uncertainty. There are many concerns that will be heavy upon our minds and hearts.  It’s natural that we should take care and make preparation for today, tomorrow and this short time ahead.

The Lord Jesus Himself asked a question which tells us we must look beyond this short time, and to eternity. “What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? “ Mark 8:36

In Matthew 11:28 it was not a question the Lord asked, but an invitation He made – to come to Him. It is possible to enjoy the rest He offers today, but then know it through all eternity. The Bible explains that sin is the root cause of all anxiety and unhappiness. Ultimately sin fixes our separation from God. The weight of that is real, it can be felt – but Jesus Himself offers rest from it – relief of knowing sins forgiven.

In the last few weeks we’ve become aware of many jobs that need to be done and can only be undertaken by those deemed ‘key’. We pray for these key workers, a number of the Christians who meet in the Gospel Hall are key workers – even they could not complete the work which was essential to offer salvation and rest from sin. Only the sinless person of Christ Jesus, the one who came from Heaven to Earth to shed His blood and give His life upon the cross of Calvary was able to say to His Father “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do”. John 17:4

His work didn’t end upon that cross – having been buried, He rose again three days later and then ascended back to Heaven. That is the finished work!

The words on display are invitation to you from a risen, living and glorified Saviour who says to you personally today “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest”.
